Spam Blockers are also referred to as: Spam Filters, e-Mail Filters, e-Mail Spam Software, Antispam, Spam Filter Software, Anti-Spam Filters, Spam Filtering Software, E-mail Spam Software, and Bayesian Filters. A Spam Blocker is a program that detects unsolicited and unwanted e-mail and prevents those messages from getting to a user's "Inbox". A Spam Blocker is basically a filter. Like other types of filters, it has configurable criteria on which it bases its determinations. For example, the simplest Spam Blocker can be set to watch for particular words in the subject line of messages and to exclude these from the user's inbox. This method is not especially effective, too often omitting perfectly legitimate messages (false positives) and letting actual spam through. More sophisticated programs, such as Bayesian filters or other heuristic filters, attempt to identify spam through suspicious word patterns or word frequency.
