Registry Cleaner Software programs are software applications designed to optimize the Windows registry performance. When users install and uninstall (remove) software, some dormant files might remain in the registry. Over time, the system's registry will become larger and larger, especially as software, drivers, and hardware components are added and removed. Many programs fail to update and/or delete unneeded settings. The Windows registry becomes corrupted or filled with errors and empty destinations. This leads to longer startup times, slower performance and eventual failure of different hardware components, software or the Windows operating system. A registry cleaner works by scanning a PC's entire registry to detect any missing or invalid entries, and repairing them. Windows comes with built-in registry tools that protect the integrity of the registry. When a PC is started, Windows Setup runs the Windows Registry Checker tool to verify the integrity of the existing registry before it performs an upgrade. If it detects registry damage, it tries to fix it automatically. The protected-mode version of the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanregw.exe) can create a backup of the system files and scan the registry for invalid entries. If invalid entries are detected, it refers to the real-mode version of the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) for a resolution. However, because the registry is so huge and complicated, and because more complexity is introduced each time changes are made, a system can develop problems that cause anomalous behaviors, degraded computer performance or even system crashes.
