Ransomware

Ransomware i ssoftware that attempts to hold a user's data hostage until payment is received. Some Ransomware is downloaded with rogue anti-Spyware programs.

In a typical Ransomware attack, the user sees a Pop-up indicating that his/her computer is infected with a particular virus or parasite and by purchasing the recommended product, the parasite can be removed. Usually, there is no such parasite; the Ransomware merely holds the user's data "hostage."

Another type of Ransomware is some proprietary software for which an offer is given to release the software as open source in exchange for a one-time payment, or until a certain amount is raised.
