Key Logger

(AKA: Keylogger)

A Key Logger is a hardware device or software program that records to a log file (usually encrypted) every keystroke made by a user. The log file created by the Key Logger can then be sent to a specified third party.

A Key Logger recorder can capture instant messages, e-mail, and any information typed on a keyboard. Some Key Logger programs also record any e-mail addresses and Web site URLs.

There are legitimate applications for Key Loggers, such as law enforcement monitoring criminals' activities, employers ensuring that employees use work computers for business purposes only, and parental supervision. However, they are most often used to record personal data for identity theft and other fraudulent activities.

Hackers can deliver Key Loggers to unsuspecting users as a Trojan or as part of a worm or virus.
