Internet

(AKA: Information Superhighway)

The Internet is a global super network containing a vast collection of computer networks that are interconnected using TCP/IP protocols. The Internet evolved from the ARPANET, which was created in the late 1960s by the U.S. Defense Department to facilitate communication among scientists who were geographically separated, but working on related projects.

The Internet is especially unique due to its decentralized design that treats each computer connected to the Internet as an independent. The World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet rather it is simply a component much like e-mail, FTP, gopher, etc.

Ever since its creation, the Internet has continued to grow into one of the most progressive achievements mankind has ever produced. Like nothing before its time, every single facet of society has been affected by the rise of the Internet. However, the Internet is mainly accredited with the mass revolution of global communications.
