Driver

A Driver, also called a Device Driver, is a software program routine that links a peripheral device or special (often optional) software to an operating system. The Driver has the knowledge of the device or software interface that programs using the Driver do not contain. A Driver is often packaged as a .DLL file.

Drivers are used for interfacing with printers, network cards, sound cards, image scanners, digital cameras, storage devices, local buses and various types of low-bandwidth I/O buses, such as those for mouse devices, keyboards, USB, etc.
