Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

(AKA: ARPANET)

The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was the precursor to and backbone of the Internet. The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network was created in the late 1960s by the U.S. Defense Department to facilitate communication among scientists who were geographically separated, but working on related projects. The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network is also credited with being the first agency to link universities and research centers.

Conceived specifically as a communication and survival tool for the U.S. military in the event of a nuclear war, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network served as an experimental venture for the latest networking technologies of the time.
